Botanical Description
Podocarpus hispaniolensis is an evergreen tree that can grow 10 metres or more tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 100cm in diameter. The wood of this species is highly valued for construction, the tree is commonly harvested from the wild for commercial use. The forest habitat of Podocarpus hispaniolensis is severely threatened, primarily as a result of logging activities in order to clear land for agriculture. Due to the high value of its timber, old-growth trees are selectively logged. The population occurs in about five locations and is severely fragmented. There is a continuing decline in its range and quality of habitat: on this basis the plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
