Botanical Description

Podocarpus teysmannii is an evergreen tree growing from 4 - 12 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be up to 30cm in diameter[ 329 Title The Gymnosperm Database Publication Author Website http://www.conifers.org/index.htm Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A vast amount of information on conifers and families of gymnosperms. ]. The tree is harvested from the wild for its useful timber, which is used locally and also traded with other member of the genus under the name 'podo'. Logging of this species cannot be quantified as its timber cannot be distinguished from related podocarps. However, considering its occurrence in part in lowland to submontane rainforest, we strongly suspect there is decline due to the scale of regional deforestation and the conversion of lowland forests for palm oil plantations. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
