Botanical Description

Gnetum formosum is an evergreen climbing plant with woody, twining stems. The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food. This species has certainly undergone a decline of suitable habitat in the last decades with large parts of its range in ecoregions classified as vulnerable or critical/endangered. Nevertheless, the species has been collected in or close by some of the larger protective areas and it also grows in less accessible higher altitudes (up to 2,000 metres), both of which probably secures its existence. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
