Botanical Description
Oryza barthii is an annual, clump-forming grass with erect to semi-erect culms that form new roots at the lower nodes; it can grow 60 - 150cm tall. Because they are a source of resistance to, or tolerance of, biotic and abiotic stresses, the most important use of the various species of wild rice is probably in breeding programmes to improve the species of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa, Oryza glaberrima). The edible seed of this species is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use. It is not cultivated; in fact, the grain has very limited use because of the difficulty in harvesting it. It is sold at a very high price, however, and is considered a product of unusually choice quality[ 685 Title Inventory of Seeds and Plants Imported.
