Botanical Description

Larix lyallii is a deciduous tree with a sparse, conic crown; it can grow up to 25 metres tall with a trunk up to 120cm in diameter[ 270 Title Flora of N. America Publication Author Website http://flora.huh.harvard.edu/fna/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description An on-line version of the flora with an excellent description of the plant including a brief mention of plant uses. ]. Because of its restricted distribution and because it grows at the timberline, this species has no commercial importance. It is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and source of materials. The extreme habitat for tree growth that Larix lyallii occupies ensures that it will not be exploited for timber. It is naturally resilient against stochastic events causing damage or death and although recruitment is episodic, it appears to be sufficient to maintain the species across its range. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
