Botanical Description

Prumnopitys standleyi is an evergreen tree with a spreading crown; it can grow up to 25 metres tall[ 329 Title The Gymnosperm Database Publication Author Website http://www.conifers.org/index.htm Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A vast amount of information on conifers and families of gymnosperms. ]. The tree is commonly harvested from the wild for its wood, which is used locally and also traded. Prumnopitys standleyi, like most members of the Podocarpaceae, is much valued for its timber and is consequently subject to selective logging. The level of exploitation has been estimated to be up to 300 trees cut each year, with the most vulnerable forests outside of protected areas (ca. 52% of its range). Since 1992 the available habitat for this species has been reduced by 12.4% by deforestation and land conversion. Where forest is cleared for pasture, individual trees or small groups may be left standing to provide shade for cattle. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
